Using Atlas Server

Copying the .rbmap folder from your computer to your device using the Atlas built-in server to connect via wifi.

This process can be used to:
  • Copy the map folder (file extn .rbmap) from the iso map file to the Maps file on Atlas
  • Copy or remove gpx and kml files to/from the Import and Export files as required (see the section titled Accessing Atlas folders in Using Atlas and Solo section of this manual).

RouteBuddy Atlas contains a built-in file server to transfer maps and data from your Mac or PC.

Please note: RouteBuddy Solo apps also contain the built-in file server but this is only for the import and export of data such as waypoints, routes and tracks. Maps cannot be imported or exported to/from the Solo apps.

To access Atlas via the the built-in file Server:

  • Activate Atlas and, once you are at the Maps list, you will see an icon on the bottom r.h.s of the Atlas window which looks like a cog wheel.
  • Touch this icon to enter the Settings window:

Atlas Settings

  • Activate the built-in file server by switching it to “ON” and you will be presented with an URL which has been given to your device by your wi-fi router.
  • The server URL looks like this: http://192.168.1.101:8080 (please note that it is the URL showing on your phone you use and not the URL shown in this manual!)
  • You now need to connect to this server from your computer.

Connect from Mac OS X: 1. Switch to Finder and, from the Go menu, select “Connect To Server”.

2. Enter the server URL into the Server Address field as it shown in Atlas/Setting/Server on your iPhone/iPad/iPod touch. Be careful to enter it exactly as shown.

3. Select the Connect button.

4. If you are running Mac OS X 10.6, select the option to connect as a guest to the server in the next window.

Once connected, the Finder window will display the Atlas server volume in the sidebar and the following folders contained in Atlas will be displayed:

  • Caches
  • Export
  • Import
  • Maps
  • Settings

There have been rare instances where some users have trouble connecting their iPhone/iPod touch/iPad via Wi-Fi. There are a number of Forums on this and so far there is no clear reason why this occurs and Apple do not seem to have been able to enlighten anyone. We suggest you re-start your router, reset your networks settings on your iPhone/iPod touch/iPad and try again.

If the server cannot be contacted, please check that:

  • Your phone is connected via Wi-Fi to your local network.
  • RouteBuddy Atlas is running, and its server has been activated.
  • The server URL has been entered correctly into the web browser.
  • Port 8080 has not been blocked by a firewall or router.

Now you are ready to copy the .rbmap folder from the .iso file to the Maps folder within Atlas on the iPhone/iPad/iPod touch. Simply drag and drop the whole .rbmap file onto the Maps folder. Make sure that the .rbmap is dropped on to the Maps folder and not outside it. You do not need to create a folder within the Maps folder. It is a simple drag and drop operation.

Mac Map Drag

Depending on the size of the map it may take a while to copy but once the map is on your phone all you need to do is licence it.

Copying gpx and kml files to/from Atlas and Solo apps

The above principles can be applied for copying gpx and kml files to and from Atlas and Solo apps

Troubleshooting

When copying large files, we suggest you plug in your iPhone/iPad/iPod touch to its charger, position it close to the router and make sure it shows full strength for the Wi-Fi network. To get the best transfer speeds you may find it useful to plug in your computer via ethernet and not use other network intensive applications or any other equipment using the Wi-Fi at the same time as your transfer.

Answering an incoming call, or switching to another application, will stop the server. When uploading a map to Atlas, do not make or receive phone calls or the transfer will be interrupted. If you experience problems connecting to the server, please ensure that your iPhone is connected to the same Wi-Fi network as your Mac or PC. To check that your phone is configured correctly, enter the server URL into a web browser. If successful, this will display the files currently stored in Atlas as below

The Map looks like it has copied but it is not appearing in the Atlas Map window

If the copy has failed for some reason it may be that a part copy map file has been placed in the Maps folder in Atlas. If this has happened the licence screen will appear in Atlas for you to licence the map but, if only part of the map has copied, then none of the map will not show on the screen.

So, before you do anything, make sure you press the “View whole map” square icon on the bottom r.h.s. of the menu bar to make sure that the map is definitely not there.

If it is not, please take the following steps:

  1. Connect your iPhone/iPod touch/iPad to the computer via the server and look inside the Maps folder. Delete the part copied .rbmap file.
  2. If there is another folder saying Maps(disabled) then delete this folder.
  3. Switch the iPhone/iPod touch/iPad off.
  4. Try to make sure that the only devices which will be using the wifi system whilst the copy takes place will be your iPhone/iPod touch/iPad and the computer from which you will be doing the map copy.
  5. Re-boot the wifi router either by using it’s on/off switch or reset button.
  6. Switch your iPhone/iPod touch/iPad on and then refer to the instructions to connect your phone via the Atlas built-in server.
  7. Then continue with the the instructions for copying your map to Atlas.
