Import a Route

Routes can be imported as gpx or kml files. The content of these files can be in many formats depending on the software that has been used to create them.

Principally a gpx or kml file can contain information such as waypoints routes and recorded tracks and their corresponding coordinates. The number of points in the file will determine the time it takes to load the route into Atlas and also how long the route takes to build on the map. If your route is long or the file contains a large number of waypoints (wpts) or route points  (rtepts) i.e. 1500 or more, we recommend breaking it down into more manageable file sizes.

As a rule of thumb we suggest that you do not load routes of more than 100 miles in length. We have loaded routes that consist of nearly 5000 points and stretch for about 250 miles but routes of this size tend to slow down both route build on the map and map rendering, zooming and panning.

The good thing about importing gpx or kml files containing a large number of waypoints into the Routes folder is that you can turn selected waypoints on or off as required.

If you are not sure whether your route file can be loaded then please contact us at support@routebuddy.com.

To import a route either:

  • Use Diskaid to see the folders within Atlas on the device or
  • Follow the instructions in Atlas folders for connecting via Server.
  • Once you can see the Routes folder within Atlas>Public>Import>Routes, drag, drop or copy the gpx file into it.

Atlas Import Routes

  • Re-access Atlas and open the map upon which you expect to see the route.
Note: If you previously left the app by pressing the Home button on the device, the app is held in a frozen state for re-use by double pressing the Home button and touching the app icon again in the "dock" of the device. You may need to re-start the app from a non-frozen state before the route will appear. This is a quirk of the iOS system.
  • Open the Waypoints, Routes and Tracks list using the list icon on the bottom r.h.s. of the action bar.
  • If the route is long or contains many points the route may still be populating the database when you access the routes list. If this is the case then it will be grey and unaccessible.
  • Once the route has built it will appear with a green button icon to the left of it. Use this button to turn the route on or off accordingly. When you are not using a route we suggest turning it off (via the Route list) as the more routes that are turned on can affect the map processing speed of the device. If the Route also has waypoints attached to it a quick tap on the screen near to the routes will turn the waypoints “ON” and again a quick tap will also turn them “OFF”.

  • If you then go to the map upon which you expect the route to appear, you will see the route build as a green line.

  • By tapping the screen once close to the route you can also see the waypoints of the route if the imported file also contained waypoints.

Edit Route Details
