Firstly find your location on the map using the circular locate icon on the left side of the bottom menu bar on the map window.
Once you have been located you can start your track.
Touch the track icon next to the locate icon and you will hear a sound which will tell you that tracking has started (if sound is enabled).
Live tracking will start and a pink line will show on the map from your starting point to wherever you are according to the location circle. You will not interrupt live tracking if you go out into another map and return to the current one.

To ensure that you do not accidentally do something on the phone whilst tracking is in progress, the lock icon on the top r.h.s. of the menu bar allows you to lock the map. To unlock use the slide bar which appears at the bottom of the map.

If you are following a route on the map whilst you are tracking, the pink track will be under the green route line and will only show if you deviate slightly from the route. You will still be able to see where you are on the route by looking at the location indicator.

If you touch the device Home button whilst tracking, (e.g. to answer a call or doing it by mistake!) or lock (sleep/wake) the screen, Atlas will continue to hold the information about where you were when you took one of those actions. However if you have moved in between taking on of those actions and re-accessing Atlas, a straight line will join the points between which you left Atlas and re-joined it again.
The Atlas Lock feature is there to ensure that you do not change anything whilst the tracking is taking place.
If you do not re-access Atlas within 10 minutes of shutting it down the track will then be terminated.
Tracking will only stop if:You can download your tracks from the tracks folder and see them in any Windows or Mac OS X application that can read .gpx files.
You can also start and stop tracking from the GPS window using the start and stop tracking buttons.
Please note that where you keep your phone whilst tracking can make a difference to the strength of the GPS signal received. If you put your iPhone in a pocket the track may well lose accuracy. A thin outer pocket of a rucksack still enables a reasonable signal.
Please remember that, as with any GPS device, the accuracy of a track is dependant on the quality of the GPS chip within the device and signal strength being received by the device.
Tests on an iPhone 3GS which had everything switched on, including roaming as well as location based services (l.b.s. need to be on for the GPS to work) found that a “battery down to 10%” warning was shown after approximately 2hrs of use. However, the phone and tracking was still working up to 2hrs 40mins. However, please do not assume that every phone will be the same, this note is just for guidance!
To conserve battery power whilst tracking it can help to switch of roaming.
Some customers have opted to by additional battery power packs to lengthen the time of tracking.
