To date we have provided free upgrades on major releases (1.x to 2.x). Our policy is that “point release” upgrades will remain free (1.1, 1.2, 1.3, etc), although some major releases may be a paid upgrade.
Routebuddy is a Universal Binary, and supports both PowerPC and Intel-based Macs.
Our recommended system requirements are:
Our minimum system requirements are:
RouteBuddy can import/export data in .gpx, .kml, .kmz, .ov2 (TomTom), .poi (Garmin), .loc, and .csv formats.
Some file formats only support a limited number of data types, and we recommend either .gpx or .kml to preserve information when transferring data between RouteBuddy and other applications.
CSV data should be organised in four columns from left to right:
Holding down the option key while importing/exporting CSV data will swap the latitude and longitude columns.
If you would prefer to receive maps on a DVD, please visit the RouteBuddy store and place a “1” for your chosen delivery method (if you have already purchased a map, you do not need to purchase it again, we will match the purchase of the DVD with your original purchase of Application and/or Maps).
Your map will be dispatched on DVD, and should reach you in approximately 5-10 working days.
Some maps, in particular the United States/North American map, are relatively large. We recommend these maps should be downloaded overnight, and ideally with an ftp client such as Fetch or Transmit since these will allow you to resume the download if it is interrupted.
If you wish to use a web browser, Camino or FireFox are often more successful at resuming a download than Safari.
Please wait until the download has completed before attempting to mount the .dmg file, and ensure you have enough disk space prior to downloading the map.
Yes, maps can be installed to any disk and will be found automatically when RouteBuddy is launched.
RouteBuddy checks each mounted volume for a Library/Application Support/RouteBuddy/Maps folder, and will load any maps contained in this location on each volume.
Unfortunately most GPS manufacturers use an encrypted file format for their map data, and as such RouteBuddy is unable to upload these proprietary file formats or convert our map data into this form. This means that you cannot upload a RouteBuddy map into a typical GPS, or load a GPS manufacturer’s map into RouteBuddy.
RouteBuddy aims to provide a plug-and-play experience with GPS devices, and we aim to expand the range of devices we support in the future. At present we support all USB-based Garmin devices, some TomTom devices, and any NMEA device. A list of devices that are known to be supported is available here. If your device is not listed, please try our free demo and let us know if you experience problems.
Some NMEA devices require a driver to be detected by Mac OS X. A third-party driver for several common devices is available on sourceforge.net. Please note that we can not guarantee this is the correct driver for your device, and prior to installation you may wish to check our forum for confirmation.
RouteBuddy allows you to transfer routes, tracks, and waypoints between your Mac and your GPS (subject to the capabilities of your device). Some devices (typically NMEA devices) do not support any form of data transfer, while others do not support the whole range of data (e.g., they may only support the transfer of routes, but not waypoints).
Prior to purchasing RouteBuddy, we recommend that you use our free demo to see what your device will support.
GPS devices are typically accurate to between 5 and 10 metres, although this can vary depending on the type of chipset contained within your device and the current satellite coverage.
The current accuracy can be seen by selecting the device panel within RouteBuddy.
