Editing a route

There are various ways of performing the following functions
- by menus, commands and textual menus.

Below we detail some of the more popular actions.

Splitting Routes

Made a very long route and want to split it?

Either
  • Take the mouse to the point on the route where you want to split it.
  • Right click to bring up the contextual menu.
  • Select split route and the route will adjust to being made up of two sections.
or

If you want to split the route at a particular waypoint in the route :

  • Highlight the waypoint in the browser list
  • Right click to get the contextual menu
  • Select split route and the route will adjust to being made up of two sections.

Remember:
Once you have split a route into two, they will still share the same end and start point even though they are two separate routes.
Deletion/moving of that common point will delete/move it for both routes.

However if, for example, you want the second route to start in a different place to the end of the first, then follow the procedure noted below to Adjust the end/start of a pair of routes created from a split route"

Joining Routes

Select the two routes  you want to join by either:

  • Select two routes and highlight the routes in the browser list use Ctrl+alt+left click (Windows) Cmd+alt+left click (Mac) if the routes are not listed next to each other
  • Place the cursor on the icon of one of the two routes in the list and right click for the contextual menu
  • Select "join routes" and the end of the first route in the list  will join on to the beginning of the second.

or

  • Click on the Select tool
  • Select the first route
  • Use the shift key to select the second route
  • Right click on the second route
  • The start of the second route will be linked to the end of the first (if you want them to join in reverse then right click on the first route instead!).

Note: It is important to select the routes in the order that you want to join them.

Add a waypoint to the route

  • Right-clickRight click the position on the route where you want to add a waypoint.
  • Select the waypoint using either right click or the select tool and drag it into the position you want it.

Undo the last waypoint in the route

If you realise when you are making a route that you are plotting the route along the wrong path, track, road etc., use the Ctrl+Z (Windows) Cmd+Z (Mac) command to undo the last waypoint.
Continue using this command to remove each waypoint until you get back to
the point at which you can re-direct your route.

Continue a route

  • Right click near the first or last waypoint of a route and select "Continue route".
  • The route will re-open for you to continue plotting from the first / last waypoint.

Adjust start / end of a pair of routes created from a split route

Example:
You have split one route into two and you want the second part of the route to start in a different place to the end of the first.

  • Select the second route and double click to open up the route editor window.
  • Click on "Details"
  • Delete the point at the start of the route in the route editor using the minus icon and click on OK.
  • You will go back to the map with the two separate routes showing on the screen with no adjoining part to the route.
  • Now, if you want to extend the start of the route so that it starts elsewhere then just use the commands to continue a route.

From the Detail route editor window you can Print out the detail of the route.

Add new Waypoints to an existing Route

  • Use Search to Find a Location or Waypoints to add waypoints to the Place file.
  • Drag the waypoint(s) you want to keep into your place folder.
  • Open the Route editor window, click on the Detail button.
  • Use the + to access the Add Waypoints window to locate the waypoint you want to add to the route

Using Undo when creating a route

Followed the wrong path whilst creating the route?

As long as you are still in the process of creating the route you can use Ctrl+Z (Windows) Cmd+Z (Mac) to undo the waypoints you have plotted incorrectly stepping one by one back through the route.

Duplicating routes

OK our hands are up, we have not, as yet, put a magic little "Duplicate Route" wand in our route editing menu or right-click contextual menu, but it is only a matter of time...

But you want to do it now?
OK then, here's how you do it - and it is pretty easy really:

  1. In the place file where you currently have the route you want to duplicate, select and highlight the route and all it's relevant waypoints.
  2. Export the file to gpx
  3. Import the file you have just exported and it will load into a new "Imported Places" Place file.
  4. Select the new file and you will see that the route and it's relevant waypoints have each been imported with a number suffix making them unique from the original route and waypoints you duplicated.
  5. You can now rename, edit, add, split, extend the duplicated route without affecting your original route.

Seemples! (but we will endeavour to make it magically easy!)
