File Import and Export

Using simple drag and drop you can import and export geotagged data to / from RouteBuddy.

Files in the following formats can be imported or exported to / from RouteBuddy:
.GPX .LOC .CSV .KML/KMZ and TomTom’s OV2.

Four types of data can be transferred within these files:

  • Name
  • Description
  • Latitude Coordinate
  • Longitude Coordinate
Addresses cannot be transferred except as a description therefore they are not searchable and the sort order would depend on how the address is transcribed in the description

CSV data is assumed to be in “longitude, latitude, name, description” format.
To reverse the longitude and latitude fields, hold down the Ctrl(Windows) Cmd (Mac) key while performing the import/export command.

Import

For import, you can either drag a file of an appropriate type into a Place file
or use the Import command from the File menu.
Ctrl+O (Windows) Cmd+O (Mac)

Please note that RouteBuddy cannot be held responsible for any corruption caused by data you import from other software or other websites.

Import of garmin .tcx files

Garmin training center exports data uploaded from device history as tcx files.
At present RouteBuddy cannot directly import tcx files but external software such as GPS Visualiser can convert tcx to gpx and kml, and these files can then be imported into RouteBuddy.

Export

Selecting Export from the File menu will export either your current highlighted Place file, or the currently selected objects within the Place file, in the format of your choice.
Ctrl+S (Windows) Cmd+S (Mac)

Exporting a "Direct" route without all the waypoints

Sometimes you want to export just the route or have only the route showing in the map window for printing, without all the waypoints that were clicked to create the route. This is especially useful for off-road routes created using the Direct routing preference:

  • Add a new Place file to create the route, give it a name e.g. "Lakes 20m"
  • Create the route in this Place file
  • Once the route is calculated give the route a name.
  • Create another new Place file and name it e.g. "Lakes 20m-no waypoints"
  • From the Place file called "Lakes 20m" drag the route and any specific marker waypoints specifically you want to be exported (e.g. rest stop) into the Place file called "Lakes 20m-no middles"
  • Do File>Export from "Lakes 20m-no middles" and you have the route and just the specific marker waypoints that you require.

Share your data

If you’d like to share waypoints, routes or tracks with friends and colleagues, create a Place file, fill it with the data you wish to send and Export the data in the appropriate file format.
