Find an Address
- Click on the Search tool either in the Library list or in the Toolbar, or use Ctrl+F (Windows) Cmd+F (Mac), RouteBuddy will take you to the same map view you were looking at in either the Locations or Place file.
- The bottom of Content Panel will change into a Find facility where you can choose to find by Address
Please note that the search for addresses will not work with RouteBuddy Topo maps on their own. If, however, you also have the RouteBuddy Road Map loaded and enabled for the area you are viewing, the search function will still be able to find addresses and these will show up on map layer you are viewing at the time.
Find by Address
To use Find by Address with RouteBuddy you usually find that entering just the property number, street name and the postal / zip code will have the best results. If you enter less than this then you may find that you get a number of addresses for the same street name in different towns.
When the address is found RouteBuddy will place a Waypoint on the map and the address will be listed in the Browser View below the map.
If you have entered an address without the postal or zip code, RouteBuddy will return all addresses matching the address you have entered:
As we sell Maps of many different countries it is true to say that each country has its own particular way of formatting an address. The data we receive from our Map data suppliers in not necessarily formatted as some users might expect it to be, e.g. Some Mail Offices require the City Name in the address, some the County. Consequently we are logging any address search issues that Users report back to us, adjusting our coding wherever we can and reporting any original data formatting issues back to our data suppliers. The RouteBuddy address search for the USA is based on the USPS addressing system.
Some tips for entering addresses
Most addresses can be found with 2 basic pieces of information:
- Property number and Road/Street/Lane name
- Postal/Zip Code (some countries only have a limited number of digits in the map data for their postcodes)
Each of these fields should be comma delimited.
Searching for Towns and Cities
City name and State/Province code are required for a more refined search.
For North America some codes in Canada are slightly different due to conflict with a state code in the USA.
The following examples show the province codes for Canada:
- Dawson, YT (Yukon Territory)
- Yellowknife, NT (Northwest Territory)
- Iqaluit, NU (Nunavut)
- Prince George, BC (British Columbia)
- Edmonton, AB (Alberta)
- Saskatoon, SK (Saskatchewan)
- Winnipeg, MO (Manitoba)
- Ottawa, OP (Ontario) I guess they used P here from Province
- Québec, QC (Quebec)
- Fredericton, NB (New Brunswick)
- Halifax, NS (Nova Scotia)
- Churchill Falls, NL (Newfoundland and Labrador)
Please note that if any part of the address contains an accent, this should be used e.g. Québec
The following are examples of USA towns and cities:
- Farmingville, NY
- Los Angeles, CA
- Dallas, TX
- Memphis, TN
- Chicago, IL
- Flagstaff, AZ
The following principles can be applied to UK towns and cities:
- Guildford, SY (abbreviated county name) or Guildford GU (first part of post code)
- Portsmouth, HA or Portsmouth, PO
Some current known issues are:
- Our data does not recognise named houses e.g. Cheddar House, Wallace Road, Wensleydale
- Our data does not recognise cardinal address look up such as: W62 N352 Windsor Avenue
- Our data recognises the address without the Town/City name and produces the correct address with the County name e.g. looking for 5 Green Crescent Road, simpsonville, SC 29682 will produce “No Items Found” whereas 5 Green Crescent Road, SC 29682 will produce 5 Green Crescent Road, Greenville, SC 29682
- Our data does not recognise full stop e.g. Marciel Ave. Madera, CA but does recognise Marciel Ave, Madera, CA or Marciel Avenue, CA
- Our data shows changes to the format of the address for different countries e.g. Kuninkaankatu 87 70100 Kuopio can be found as 87 Kuninkaankatu, Kuopio, 70100
Address references in the above examples are not real addresses.
Adding search results to your database
In the Browser view highlight the address result you want to keep and drag it onto your Place file.
The waypoint will also be stored in the locations database for use in other Place files.
